The City of Quincy Plan Commission will meet on Tues. 5/12/09 at 7:00 pm in the City Council Chambers to review and make a recommendation to the City Council on a request by US Cellular to build a 135' tower on our parish campus. Because our parish campus is located in a residential zoning district, special permission must be obtained to build a tower of this height. US Cellular prefers the site on our property because it will provide optimum service to its customers. The City's Planning Dep't opposes our site because it prefers that such towers be placed in commercial zoning districts, when possible. For instance, a similar tower was recently approved for the Town & Country Bank property at 30th and Oak (even though it is similarly situated to an adjoining residential neighborhood). This is an important project for US Cellular but also for our parish. As you know, we have embarked on an ambitious, and expensive, improvement of our parish campus. This project will assist us in the realization of our plans by providing a steady source of income and other permanent improvements (such as additional storage facilities and landscaping). Ultimately, the full realization of the Living Stones project will benefit the entire neighborhood by providing additional parking and smoother traffic flow, which will reduce traffic congestion. Our improvements will provide an aesthetically appealing campus. The tower (which will also serve as a flag pole) will be a complement to our improvements, rather than a detraction. More importantly, it will not intrude upon our neighbors' enjoyment of their own property, whether they be the residents to the North and East or the educational and recreational uses to the South and West. This project is of vital importance to our parish. Please attend the Plan Commission  meeting on Tuesday and show your support.
